Naomi Oreskes - Writer, Historian, Global Warming/Climate Change

Naomi Oreskes (Ph.D., Stanford, 1990) is Professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on the historical development of scientific knowledge, methods, and practices in the earth and environmental sciences, and on understanding scientific consensus and dissent. She has held grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society, and is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

Oreskes is the author of The Rejection of Continental Drift: Theory and Method in American Earth Science (Oxford University Press, 1999), “Verification, validation, and confirmation of numerical models in the earth sciences” (Science 263: 641-646, 1994), and “Objectivity or Heroism: On the Invisibility of Women in Science” (Osiris 11: 87-133, 1996), and editor of Plate Tectonics: An Insider’s History of the Modern Theory of the Earth (with Homer Le Grand, Westview Press, 2001), which was cited by Library Journal as one of the best science and technology books of 2002, and by Choice as an outstanding academic title of 2003. She is currently completing “Science on a Mission: American Oceanography in the Cold War and Beyond,” to be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2007.

Oreskes’s most recent work deals with the science of climate change. Her 2004 essay “The Scientific Consensus on Climate Change” (Science 306: 1686), led to Op-Ed pieces in the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Los Angeles Times, and has been widely cited in the mass media, including National Public Radio (Fresh Air), The New Yorker, USA Today, Parade, as well as in the Royal Society’s publication, “A guide to facts and fictions about climate change,” and, most recently, in Al Gore’s movie, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Merchants of Doubt is a 2010 book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway. Oreskes and Conway, both American science historians, identify some remarkable parallels between the climate change debate and earlier controversies over tobacco smoking, acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer. They argue that spreading doubt and confusion was the basic strategy of those opposing action in each case.^[1] In particular, Fred Seitz, Fred Singer, and a few other contrarian scientists joined forces with conservative think tanks and private corporations to challenge the scientific consensus on many contemporary issues.^[7]

The Marshall Institute has been critical of the book, but most other reviewers received it favorably. One reviewer said that Merchants of Doubt is exhaustively researched and documented, and may be one of the most important books of 2010. Another reviewer saw the book as his choice for best science book of the year.^[8]

James' Observations Post-Interview:

1)- She said the ices ages and warming by the SUN (changes sunshine) in the past. But today we have the highest level in Co2 in history 390 ppm (historically the peak was 200 ppm)

2)- The COs has more of a type of carbon that comes from burning pants and oil.

3)-Volcanoes do add CO2 into the air, but the mega-tons of dust shot into the atmosphere, it actually cools off the earth withy lack of sunshine.

4)-the coral and trees absorbs O in harmony with the warming, baking up data of a warming trend.

5)- NO long term planet temps to compare if they are warming as well (and if it is this hard on earth to measure world temp, imagine the problem with accurately measuring the temp on planets for thousands of years).

6)- Originally Cap and Trade was created by 1st George Bush, and actually lowered Acid Rain.

One thing Naomi did not do, and in fairness, I do not know how it can be done outside a trained scientist looking at the data direct, is prove the absolute mechanism between high C02 directly making the planet warmer... and that warmer is a bad thing... -James
